NEW signing Andy Whi-ng says he is determined to keep his place in the Oxford United side after completing his comeback from injury in Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Birmingham.
The former Leyton Orient defender missed Saturday’s 1-0 win against MK Dons, but was drafted into midfield in place of Asa Hall and completed his first full game of pre-season.
“I didn’t even think I was starting against Birmingham,” said Whing, who was originally listed as a substitute on the teamsheet.
“The position is not new to me as I often play in midfield in training and it’s was where I played last year for Orient.
“I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was worried about my fitness, but I played the whole game and felt fine.”
Whing, who helped set up United’s second goal, said he was keen to hang on to his place when United kick off their League Two campaign at Rotherham a week on Saturday.
He added: “First and foremost, I’m a defender, but if I’m playing in the first team, I don’t mind which position I play.
“It’s good to win pre-season games from a confidence point of view, but you can’t read too much into them.
“None of it means anything if we get beaten on August 6.
“There is a lot of competition at the club, so you have to earn your right to get into the team.”
He added: “Birmingham are a good team and we had to hang in there at times.
“I thought the second goal was fantastic. The cross in was brilliant and it was a great finish.
“I’m a big Villa fan, so to put one over them made the win even better!”
- UNITED are set to sign former Bury keeper Wayne Brown, 34, as replacement for Simon East-wood.
Brown, who has just completed a spell at South African club Supersport United, is awaiting international clearance.
