A brilliant spell of seam bowling by Faisal Khalid helped Oxfordshire Development XI to a convincing 156-run victory over Melo Park High School, Pretoria, in a friendly at Tiddington yesterday.

Khalid, who moved from Banbury Twenty to Leamington this season, returned the impressive figures of 5-21 from seven overs as the South African tourists were shot out for 113 in reply to their hosts’ score of 269-4 from 50 overs.

Three of Khalid’s victims were yorked as Oxon recorded a handsome victory over a side who were more talented than the scores might suggest.

After winning the toss, Oxon soon lost Lloyd Sabin, but Oxford’s Wasim Mehmood (65), the dominant partner, and Banbury’s Richard West put on 87.

But the real fireworks came when Chris Watling was joined by Jonny Cater. The pair added 147, with the last 109 coming off ten overs.

Aston Rowant batsman Watling’s 80 was scored off 75 balls with five fours and five sixes, while Cater, from Buckingham, was unbeaten on 72, having faced just 51 balls with eight fours and three sixes.
