Oxford United have signed a young striker with an international pedigree.
Manager Chris Wilder captured 20-year-old Ryan Doble, on loan from Southampton until the end of the season.
Doble, who has been on loan at Stockport County this year, making three appearances, will not be joining up with the U’s in time for their home npower league Two game against Burton Albion on Sunday.
That’s because he is on international duty with Wales Under 21s against Andorra this weekend.
Doble has twice been drafted into the Wales senior squad before, and if players are forced to drop out of manager Gary Speed's full Wales outfit, he could be needed for the squad to face England at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday.
He has previously figured in the senior Wales squad for the Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland when Robert Earn-shaw and Craig Bellamy pulled out through injury.
The fair-haired forward will link up with Oxford United’s squad next week when they prepare for the match at Bury on April 2.
Born in Abergavenny, Doble joined Southampton’s Academy at the age of eight and completed his scholarship with the Saints.
He has yet to make his debut for Southampton, but has appeared several times as an unused substitute for the senior team.
Capped by Wales at under 17, under 19 and under 21 level, he played a major role in Southamp-ton’s FA Youth Cup run in 2008-9, scoring six goals.
He made his Football League debut when on loan at Stockport, in a 4-1 defeat by Macclesfield.
In his second appearance for County, Doble scored at Bradford City, before being sent off in the 64th minute, following a challenge on Luke Oliver.
Doble was suspended for the game between Stockport and Oxford on March 5, but returned to play for County in their 0-0 draw with Burton.
U’s manager Wilder said he has been looking to bring in a forward who could stretch teams with his pace and running, and Doble will hopefully fit the bill as Oxford try to maintain their push for a play-off place.
United have also cast an eye over 20-year-old Swansea defender Jamie Grimes.
The 6ft 2in Nottingham-born defender joined the Swans at the age of 16 after being released by Leicester City.
He has yet to make a first-team appearance for Swansea and has had loan spells at Welsh Premier League side Haverfordwest and Blue Square side Forest Green.
Grimes played in United reserves’ totesport.com Combination game at Southend on Tuesday which ended in a 1-1 draw.
