Gosport Borough 3 (Bennett 40, 55, Shaw 71)
Abingdon United 2 (Lewis 30, 88)
Abingdon United returned from the south coast empty-handed, despite a battling display against the high-fliers.
After Alan Foster made several good saves in the Abingdon goal, the visitors took the lead when Graham Lewis fired in at the second attempt after keeper Pat Cox blocked his initial shot.
Paul Orgad should have doubled their lead, but fired wide and Abingdon were made to pay five minutes from the break when Justin Bennett equalised.
On the hour, the hosts took the lead when Bennett’s free-kick deflected in off the wall into the net past Foster.
Minutes later, Foster denied Bennett his hat-trick after racing off his line.
But with 20 minutes left it looked all over for Abingdon as Sewell raced clear before making it 3-1.
But Abingdon didn’t give up, with Steve Davis’s fierce shot parrried around a post by Cox, before the keeper denied Yashwa Romeo with a fine stop.
Five minutes from time, Lewis doubling his tally, with a super lob which went over Cox before dropping under the bar and into the net to set up a nervy finale.
Abingdon did everything to force a draw, but the hosts held on for victory.
