Oxford came from behind to win their first Varsity Match for three years three years with a dominating performance at The Troxy, London on Thursday night.
The Dark Blues’ 6-3 victory banished the memories of their nightmare whitewash defeat by Cambridge in 2009, the last time it was held in the capital.
On a night of pulsating action, Oxford’s David Lee and Faraz Sayed both lost close bouts to give Cambridge a 2-0 lead.
The comeback was sparked by a first-round knock-out by Oliver Harriman, whose opponent was out cold for several minutes.
The Dark Blues’captain Josh Fields drew things level with a classy performance, He was followed by the remarkable Andy Ormerod-Cloke, who, in his first bout, overcame an experienced opponent to win a majority decision.
Steffen Hoyemsvoll lost out somewhat controversially, but Alec Ward outpointed the Cambridge captain to give Oxford a 4-3 lead.
Ben Morris and Andrei Akhvleidani settled things with first-round stoppages to seal a memorable win for the Dark Blues.
A exultant Fields said: “I’d like to thank the squad, the coaches and our support for guiding us to this long-awaited and much deserved victory.
“ I am a proud captain of an extremely strong Oxford team.”
