The end of the 2010-11 coarse fishing river season came to a close on Monday and as it coincided with some decent weather, I’m sure some good fish were caught by specimen hunters.

The chub were feeding well, while pike will have also put a bend in a few rods.

Match results from the Thames on Sunday were a bit of a mixed bag, but the Cherwell turned up some clonking chub.

Overall, I don’t think that our rivers around Oxford fished too badly last season and it was probably an improvement on the previous 12 months.

Thanks to everyone who sent me photographs, stories and all the match secretaries who gave me their results.

If you don’t fancy a close- season break, you can still go fishing on stillwaters, commercial fisheries and canals If you do, remember you will need a new rod licence which starts on April 1.

It will cost you the same as last year, £27, and is available from Post Offices, online at www.environment-agency. gov.uk/rodlicence or by calling 0844 800 5386 or 08708 506 506 to sign up to a direct debit.

l TWO Kidlington anglers, Billy Burnell and Jason Bean, travelled over to Worcestershire for a few days’ fishing on the River Severn and caught some nice specimens, especially barbel.

The duo, who spend most of their time fishing the Cherwell, Oxford Canal and local commercials, fished at Grimley, Hampden Lode and Quatford, which would be classed as the middle Severn, and which hold huge shoals of chub and barbel.

Both caught a lot of fish, with Bean landing more than 100lb of barbel including one of 10.5.0. Burnell’s best barbel was 9.0.0.
