Captain Alex Stevenson kicked 20 points as Oxfordshire defeated Berkshire 40-18 in their final National Under 20 Championship match.
But victory was not enough for Oxon to qualify from South West Region A as Dorset & Wilts saw off Buckinghamshire 36-0.
It meant Dorset’s 23-21 victory over Oxfordshire in the previous match at Henley proved decisive.
Berkshire fly half Shaun Brown and Stevenson (Rugby Lions) traded early penalties before Oxon wing Harry Carr (Grove) fielded a ricochet and blasted in from 65 metres, Stevenson converting.
Flanker Robbie Wright (Henley) and No 8 Evan Sawyer (Oxford Brookes) set up the visitors’ second try for lock Richard Russell (Oxford University).
It was 20-8 at the break thanks to Stevenson’s penalty and try from Berkshire wing Will Rasinbridge.
Flanker Tim Applevey stor-med over for a second Berks try, but Oxon scored twice in three minutes.
Full back Adam Lubbock (Henley) raced on to the end of a long Stevenson pass to sprint clear, and then wing Chris Clare’s (Grove) deft chip was latched on to by Carr to send flanker Jack Horwood (Bicester) over.
Stevenson converted both and kicked two more penalties after home wing Joe Grindle ran in their third try.
Stevenson said: “I’m really proud of the lads.
“The forwards gave us a great platform and gave us backs plenty of ball to work with, and we had Harry Carr on the wing and others with the gas to finish it off.”
