Witney 64, Wimborne 5
Witney ended their home drought in style with a nine-try demolition of South West 1 East’s basement boys.
Having not tasted victory at Hailey Road since November 13, the hosts would surely have been happy just to edge it.
But instead, Witney produced the sort of form that saw them top the table early in the season, with centres James Lamb and Joe Collins bagging try doubles.
Wimborne, however, were decidedly poor and never recovered from being 21-0 down after 16 minutes.
Witney used their driving maul to good effect in the first half and one such surge created the platform for the opening try on six minutes Fly half Pierre Dubost’s pass was knocked back by a Wimborne hand and Collins reacted well to collect and score.
Full back Henry Lamb landed the first of eight conversions and then launched wing Jake Thomas for a superb jinking effort.
Henry Lamb cantered down the left wing for try No 3 after taking a clever off-load from lock Marc Copperwheat and made it three conversions from three.
Wimborne’s defence was very brittle at times, none more so than for try No 4 on 26 minutes.
Witney wing James Monks ran back to field a loose ball, but was still able to turn and beat at least four defenders to power over, Henry Lamb converting.
The hosts played with real fluency as Dubost pulled the strings and they managed a fifth try when James Lamb dummied through for his brother Henry to convert.
Wimborne had their best spell late in the first half and scored their only try after Witney flanker Carl Campbell was sin-binned.
Fly half Scott Ansell beat Witney scrum half Gareth Campbell to finish on the left and make up for an earlier shocking penalty miss.
It took a Henry Lamb penalty on 52 minutes to get the scoreboard moving in the second half, although he had already wasted an earlier kick.
Gareth Campbell scorched away for try No 6 on the hour to end some very scrappy play, and Henry Lamb converted.
Will Bibby, Gareth’s Campbell’s replacement, scored with almost his first touch from close range, following Collins and Dubost’s break on the right.
Henry Lamb’s conversion made it 52-5, while Aslett fumbled a great chance to bag a second for Wimborne.
Replacement flanker Tim Muller added real energy for Witney and his rapier charge through midfield set up Collins to notch his second score.
There was still time for one more score as Dubost’s quick hands allowed James Lamb a simple finish, with Henry Lamb’s conversion completing the rout.
