Oxford Hawks men maintained their promotion charge in Premier 1 of the South League with a 4-1 win at Wycombe.
It gave them a derby double over their local rivals.
Knowing there was no margin for error, with Richmond and Eastbourne also aiming for the promotion places, Hawks struck two goals in quick succession.
Wycombe’s attacking style leaves them prone to the coun-ter-attack and Hawks cashed in as Ted Bannett latched onto a pass from Dave Cresswell and then Cresswell volleyed No 2 off a defender’s stick.
Rob Miller and Si Robinson’s quality flat stick tackles kept thwarting the home side.
In the second half, Hawks won more possession, Wyc-ombe’s energy levels started to drop and Hawks scored two further goals through Sam Chilvers and Freddie Coppin.
Wycombe scored a penalty corner in the final minutes.
It was a vital victory for second-placed Hawks, with leaders Richmond winning 7-3 at Henley and Eastbourne triumphing 7-2 at Barnes.
Oxford University have been enjoying a fine and high-scoring season.
They followed up last week’s 5-2 victory over Cambridge in the Varsity Match by crushing Purley Walcountians 6-2 in South League Premier 1 on Saturday.
Adam Jordan (2), John Federson (2), Alex Evans and Tom Mullins scored against Purley. Jordan similarly hit a brace in the Varsity Match win, with Evans (2) and Alex Stobbart also on the scoresheet.
Oxford also retained the women’s Varsity Trophy with a 1-1 draw against Cambridge. Sarah Ffrench Constant got Oxford’s goal.
Banbury’s recent good form meant that three points from the last three games would see them avoid relegation from South Premier 1.
But they will have to wait until next weekend at least to get those points as they were beaten 4-1 by a well organised Old Georgians side.
South African Ryan Van der Reit has been the top scorer in the national leagues in the past year, and he again made the difference for Old Georgians, scoring two drag flicks and creating a third short-corner goal, all in the first half.
Tyson Nunneley got Banbury’s goal.
Rover Oxford drew 2-2 with Maidenhead in the Regional division.
Rover opened the scoring when Tim Conlon’s pass found James Nielsen unmarked in the D to beat the keeper.
Maidenhead hit back to level and early in the second half, the visitors took the lead after a quick break.
But Rover levelled with tenminutes to go thanks to a great turn by Rich Beer that beat three defenders. He then calmly finished past the keeper.
Wallingford were overwhelmed 8-0 at Slough.
City of Oxford improved their prospects of safety in Regional 2 by beating Rover Oxford 2nd 5-1.
Rover went in front early on, but Tom Small equalised, and goals from Tom Dumas and Andy Small put City 3-1 up at half-time. Keith Simpson and John Alcock added two more.
Witney’s 5-0 win over Eastcote 3rd means they effectively need just a point from their remaining two Division 1 games to clinch promotion for the second season running.
Paul Dowers (2), Chris Partridge (2) and Ben Wells scored Witney’s goals.
