Thame United’s friendly game against Oxford United to officially open their new £3m ground tonight has been called off because of the arctic conditions.
The pitch at the Meadow View Park stadium is covered by seven inches of snow and with the weather conditions set to worsen, chairman Jack Collinge said he was already talking to the League Two side about rescheduling the game for next month.
“I’m pretty disappointed, but you can’t control the weather,” said Collinge.
“When you have an opening planned for December then there is a risk of bad weather, but we never expected anything like this.
“Since we’ve been open we’ve had a lot of people in to use the facilities.
“We’ve only been able to play one game at the stadium (against Bracknell) and I’d much rather see football being played on it than a blanket of snow.
“There has been a lot of hard work put in at Thame in the last five years, but we’re very pleased with the outcome.”
