Holders Fieldside A, from the Premier & Division 1 battled their way to a 5-1 win at Eynsham D in the first round of the Buildbase Cup.
With Fieldside required to give a 40-point start per frame to the Division 4 side, the match was tight all the way, with four frames decided on the black ball.
Roy Gascoyne and Mick Bennett shared the opening frames, Bennett taking the first 58-55 and Gascoyne the second 81-73.
Jimmy Ewers then pipped Joe Leech 69-43, 76-67 to give Fieldside a 3-1 advantage.
Karl Walker sealed the match in the fifth frame 88-83 against Syd Patterson.
And he completed the match with a 119-77 win in the final frame.
Sixteeen-year-old Callum Vignall, who is in his maiden season, held his nerve to defeat experienced campaigner Bob Thiele 69-44, 68-58.
That set up Ashton A up for a 4-0 victory against Eynsham A.
Peter Fenn won the other two frames for Ashton, getting the better of Lawrence Parsons 61-18, 68-35.
