Jake Wright continues to make rapid progress from his metatarsal injury – and could feature in Oxford United’s Christmas programme.
The centre back, a key part of last year’s promotion-winning squad, has endured a frustrating campaign with injury and suspension.
But the former Brighton defender is on the road to recovery and could return more than two weeks ahead of schedule.
Wright limped out of United’s 2-1 victory at League Two table-toppers Chesterfield on November 23.
And after being assessed by medical staff later that week, he was thought likely to be out until mid to late January.
He missed the start of the season through a back injury, and after he did return to first-team action, was sent off in the defeat at Bradford and was forced to serve a three-match ban.
However, boss Chris Wilder told the Oxford Mail last night that he is hopeful of having Wright available for part of the U’s festive programme.
And after Leigh Franks limped out of United’s reserves 2-2 draw at Watford on Tuesday with a hamstring injury, the news is a big boost for Wilder and the club.
Harry Worley and Ben Futcher are the only two fully fit, recognised centre halves in the squad if Franks is ruled out, although Paul Wotton and Anthony Tonkin can play there if needed.
