Adam Wootton secured the first victory of his professional career by winning the PGA South Region’s Winter Series event at Hankley Common.
The 24-year-old, who is attached to Oxford City, shot a five-under-par 66 to claim a one-shot victory.
Wootton’s success earned him £750 and a shoe, glove and ball contract from event sponsors Titleist and FootJoy for the 2011 season.
The Oxford Golf Centre pro said: “I turned pro in June, so it was quite nice to win in my first year.
“It was raining all day and close to being called off. All the bunkers were ground under repair (GUR).
“I was delighted to play as well as I did in those conditions.”
Starting on the tenth tee, Wootton reached the turn in two-under-par.
His front nine then included a birdie from 30 feet and holing a 45-yard sand wedge for an eagle two.
He said: “I came in and saw I was in front of Jamie Harris and James Ablett, and was pretty chuffed as they’re always there or thereabouts in these events.
“But it took around one and a half hours before the rest of the field was in, so I just had to wait and see if anyone else was having a hot round.
“I’m very pleased to get my first win under my belt as a professional.”
Wootton is doing a PGA training course, while playing as much as he can.
“I work three to four days a week at the golf centre and practice there as well,” he said.
- FORMER snooker player Willie Thorne will be Five Star Events’ 2011 celebrity.
TV commentator Thorne will support the Oxfordshire charity series, who also welcome Frilford Heath’s Steve Styles as their 2011 president.
This year, Five Star raised £11,000 for the Samantha Dixon Trust in memory of Phil Garner.
The 2011 charity will be Footsteps Foundation, supporting children with specialist physiotherapy programmes.
Five Star’s 100th event will also take place next year – at Frilford Heath on August 19 – when all their previous celeb-rities will be invited.
