Struggling Oxford United will have to defy all the odds if they are to win at table-topping Chesterfield’s new B2net Stadium tonight.

The U’s, with three points from the last six league games, are currently bottom of the League Two form table, while the Spireites (13 points) sit top.

And manager Chris Wilder says it’s inevitable that everyone will be dismissing his team’s prospects of ending their losing run, against the side with the best home record in the division.

“I suppose everybody in the world will think that it’s a home banker, so it’s up to us to dig in and see if we can get something out of it,” he said.

“My players gave it a right go in the second half on Saturday and we’ve got to do that at Chesterfield.”

Bookmakers Coral make Chester-field 8-11 to win, with Oxford a distant 4-1 shot.

United will also be coming up against an old boy in top form.

Striker Craig Davies hit his 14th goal of the season in Chesterfield’s 2-0 win at Aldershot on Saturday as John Sheridan’s team bounced back from their surprise home defeat by Burton the previous week.

Capped five times by Wales, Davies is the second-highest scorer in League Two, behind Rotherham’s Adam Le Fondre.

The former Manchester City trainee was a first-team regular for Oxford from 2004-2006, scoring eight goals in his 48 appearances before being sold to Italian Serie B side Hellas Verona for £85,000.

He returned to England after making just one appearance for Verona and has played for Wolves, Oldham, Brighton and Port Vale.

But it is this season that the striker, still only 24, has really increased his scoring ratio, his 12 league goals coming from just 15 appearances.

Sheridan believes Davies can return to the top level, if he improves just one or two aspects of his game.

He said: “He has got desire and work- rate for the team and I would hate to play against him.”

United will need to ensure they do not give Davies any room to shoot. This season he has developed a reputation for scoring spectacular goals with dipping shots from outside the box.

Chesterfield are still missing midfielder Derek Niven, who received a three-match ban in the home defeat by Burton. They are likely to be unchanged.

The U’s have everyone available, with no knocks picked up in the 1-0 home defeat by Gillingham, and there must be a chance that James Constable will return to the starting line-up after improving the team when he came off the bench on Saturday.
