Oxford University head coach Murray Henderson was relatively pleased by his side’s workout against Major Stanley’s XV yesterday, which resulted in a 21-14 victory.
Henderson was impressed by the quality of Oxford’s opponents, who led 14-7 at one point.
“They had some quality in their team as you saw from their defence,” said Henderson.
“It was a more competitive game than last year.
“The conditions generally made for a slow game rather than an enterprising one with lots of points scored.
“I am happier with our defence than I was last week as Stanley’s had some strong moves.
“Overall, I am pretty happy with the display.
“Progress is being made, but there is still a lot more to come.”
He added: “This is a great fixture and brought players to Iffley Road who have not been there before.”
Henderson confirmed centre Alex Cheesman had not suffered a serious shoulder injury.
The Dark Blues now have a quick turnaround before they host Saracens on Monday night.
Henderson said their team that night should be close to the one they hope to field in the Varsity Match, possibly with the exception of the centre combination.
The following Monday, Oxford entertain Northampton Saints in their final match before Twickenham.
Cambridge University host the Steele-Bodger’s XV next Wednesday in their equivalent to the Stanley’s fixture before which Dark Blues captain Nick Haydon will formally challenge them to play the Varsity Match.
