Woodstock Harriers’ Steve Naylor made a successful start in the league as he cruised to victory in the opening round at Ascott-under-Wychwood on Sunday.

After several days of rain, the skies cleared for the first race in the 2010-11 season, and with a cool breeze, conditions were good at the Crown Farm venue.

Naylor led home the field in style, clocking an impressive time of 28mins 54secs over the 8.5km course – seeing off his nearest rival Tim Traynor of White Horse Harriers – by one min 46 seconds.

Cirencester’s Chris Illman was third in 30.44.

Abingdon Amblers won the Div-ision 1 men’s race with five of their seven points-scoring runners finishing in the top 30.

They were led home by Simon Fisher, who was fifth in 30.49.

Abingdon saw off the challenge of Oxford City by 16 points, who had six of their scoring athletes home in the top 50, reigning men’s champion Darrell Bellinger leading the way in sixth place (31.09).

In men’s Division 2, Traynor’s second place helped White Horse Harriers to top spot on 280 points, with Woodstock eight points adrift.

Oxford Brookes University won the Division 3 race, amassing 289 points.

Susie Bush (Newbury) won the women’s 6.5km race in 24.02.

She was a convincing winner ahead of Cirencester’s Jane Wassell (LV35), who clocked 24.58.

Lauren Barklie (Abingdon) was third, while Oxford City’s Melissa Hawtin, taking part in the senior competition for the first time, crossed the line fourth in 25.05.

Cirencester took the women’s Division 1 team honours with 21 points, finishing well ahead of Banbury Harriers.

Abingdon Amblers A won the Division 2 race by a margin of 12 points, with all three of their points-scoring runners finishing inside the top 35.

In the junior events, Oxford City’s Freddie and Storm Sunderland won their respective age groups.

Freddie raced to victory in the under 11 boys’ race, clocking 3.23 over a short course, while Storm clocked 7.06 to win the under 13 girls’ race.

City’s success continued in the under 13 boys’ race as Nat Jones led from start to finish, clocking 6.50.

The younger Hawtin sisters, Lauren and Beth, dominated the combined under 15/17 girls’ race.

Lauren won the race, taking the under 17 girls’ honours in 13.00.

Beth made it a Hawtin and Oxford City one-two, finishing second in 13.12 to take the under 15 honours.

Not surprisingly, City’s girls took a convincing win in the team race as Jade Walker finished third to take a clean sweep.

In the combined under 15/17 boys’ race, Swindon Harrier Nyle Clinton romped to victory in 17.13, while Matthew Marshall (Oxford City) ousted last year’s star Christian von Eitzen to finish second, and first in the under 15 category in 17.36.

Radley’s von Eitzen was third in the race and second under 15 in 17.43.

Von Eitzen, however, led Radley to joint first with Swindon in the team race.
