Benson AFC midfielder Damien Rigozzi faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a horrific leg injury during the 6-0 win over Steventon which saw them take over at the top of Division 2.
The incident happened in a challenge with the Steventon keeper, which saw play held up while Rigozzi, 25, was taken to hospital by ambulance where he had an emergency operation on Sunday morning on his left shin to repair two tendons and deep gashes.
Benson manager Lee Matt-hews, who is also a trained physio, said: “It was a nasty collision. The keeper came rushing out. It was a 50-50 challenge and Rigozzi came off worst. It was accidental.
“The injury was horrific. I knew it was bad when I pulled his sock down.
“Damien hasn’t had much luck. He has broken a wrist and a foot in the last few years. It’s such a shame because he is such a talented footballer.
“He had to have two tendons reattached, some muscle tissue reattached as well as four inner stitches and 16 on the outside.”
Rigozzi had scored before he suffered the injury, and Matthews added: “It’s a massive blow to lose him because he is our midfield playmaker. He’s going to be out for at least six weeks I would say.
“Play was held up while we waited for the paramedics to arrive, but the players were determined to play on and win the game for Damien.
“He scored a goal before he was injured, but he was gutted because his midfield partner (Chris Roberts) scored a hat-trick.”
Andrew Ellis and Rob Lyons completed Benson’s tally.
