Oxford Hawks hockey player Emma Batten is hoping to take her prolific goalscoring form for the club into the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
The 21-year-old joined Hawks aged 11, and represented her country at junior level, before becoming a regular fixture in the first team after finishing top-scorer in the Under 21 European Championships.
Clubmate Henri Coles said that her call-up had given everyone at the club a big lift.
“It’s great recognition for us, and we are all very proud of her,” she said.
“When we got promoted in 2005 she must have scored over half of our goals, so has always been a real talent.”
Although Wales are not expected to set the hockey tournament alight, Cole is confident that Batten, whose family live in Summertown but who is now studying at Bath University, can make her mark.
“There is only a 16-strong squad, so hopefully she can make a big impression,” she said.
