JOSH Payne has told Oxford United manager Chris Wilder that he wants to stay at the club for another month.
With his loan spell from Championship side Doncaster about to expire, Wilder was keen for the midfielder, who turns 20 in November, to stay longer following some impressive displays.
And the manager is optimistic that the Yorkshire club will play ball.
“We have spoken to Doncaster about Josh and are pretty hopeful that they will extend his loan,” said Wilder.
“He has done well in his overall play and I think everyone has been impressed by his performances.
“I thought he put on an excellent display against Hereford – he’s been very consistent.”
And Payne, a former West Ham youth team captain, is keen to stay longer at the Kassam Stadium.
“I was just about to have breakfast at the club when the manager (Sean O’Driscoll) called me into the office and asked if I would be interested in going on loan to Oxford for a month,” he said.
“I jumped at the chance because I’m only on a short-term contract (it ends in January) and it gave me a chance to impress.
“It’s been good so far and hopefully I can stay for another month. It’s nice to be playing playing regular football again.
“The training is brilliant and the atmosphere is good.
“Ideally, I want to be playing first-team football at a decent club and Oxford are one of those.”
Payne is confident that the U’s can get back to winning ways at Crewe tomorrow after last week’s disappointing home defeat at the hands of Stockport.
“We were all really down after Saturday, because we played well enough, but couldn’t get a goal – and they did in their five-minute spell,” he said.
“But hopefully we can put that right by getting the result we are hoping for at Crewe on Saturday.”
