Oxfordshire urgently needs more referees if last Saturday’s problems are not to be repeated.
The county referees society were so short of officials that a number of matches could not be catered for – including Gosford All Blacks’ home game with Drifters in the BB&O Premier Division.
Keith Latham, re-appointments secretary for the Oxfordshire society, said most people signing up to referee only wanted to do so for junior matches on Sundays.
“It was the worst Saturday through injuries and unavailability that I have known in the last ten years,” said Latham, who is himself injured.
“I was down to 11 referees out of about 40.
“It is frustrating because I don’t like letting clubs down.”
Latham added: “New referees will get support and be made to feel welcome.
“Unless we get more people, I can’t see this situation improving.”
