Chris Wilder says that he wants his side to keep playing entertaining football – and will not change his beliefs.
The Oxford United manager was understandably disappointed after watching his team outplay their opponents, but lose the game for the second time at home this season.
Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Stockport ended a two-game winning run, and echoed the 2-1 defeat at home to Bury last month.
But the U’s boss said that the way his side played, was again encouraging.
“We know that we should have won the game,” he said.
“But we will learn from our mistakes, and I can’t be angry with the players.
“The way that they kept on playing football right until the end is very important.
“I could easily go out there and buy a 6’4 forward and we can just keep lumping the ball up to him.
“But I do not believe that is how you play football and I do not believe that is what the fans want to see either.
“Yes we want to win football matches, But I don’t want my team to resort to smashing it forward to try and do that, because that does not suit us.”
Wilder, however, knows that his players have to be much more clinical in front of goal.
“Let’s be honest, we should have been three-up at half-time,” he said.
“Matt Green has gone clean through one-on-one and should score, and on another day Beano (James Constable) has scored a hat-trick.
“But we are new in this league and we need to learn from our mistakes.
“That game has gone, so we concentrate on Crewe next Saturday and prepare properly for that.”
