Oxford Kings are the national champions.

A 13-3 victory over Liverpool Trojans in the final ensures their position as the best team in British Baseball Federation’s AAA Division.

The club, which is affiliated with Oxford University Baseball Club, but plays as a separate entity, has been in existence for 11 years.

It was founded at Keble College, Oxford and plays home games at Horspath Athletics Ground.

Kings won the regular season championship after triumphing in 19 of their 24 matches.

That put them through to the final play-offs, where the top two teams from the south took on their northern counterparts in a round-robin competition.

Kings started with a tense 2-1 victory over Bracknell Inferno, thanks to scores from Adam Stegeman, who was named man-of-the-match, and Masaharu Egawa.

The chances of them making the final were in the balance after falling to a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Liverpool, who were making it two wins out of two.

But an 8-5 victory in their final clash, against Herts Eagles, ensured they faced Liverpool in a rematch.

And it proved to be a thrilling clash.

After three innings, the score was tied at 2-2.

It appeared that one run either way would prove decisive – but Kings had other ideas.

A sensational last innings to the match saw the Oxford team smash no fewer than ten runs to move to the brink of success after a devastating display.

A series of defensive errors and key hits from Stegeman, Roger Farrell and John LoBreglio, a lecturer in Japanese Studies at Oxford Brookes, saw them move 12-2 ahead.

Stunned, Liverpool could find no way back and Kings went on to record a 13-3 success.

To add to their impressive weekend, Oxford had further celebrations when Masaharu Egawa was named most valuable player for the final game, and Chris Oates the most valuable player for the tournament.
