Chipping Norton’s Alice Powell believes she is still in with a shout in the Formula Renault BARC Championship, despite some mixed results in the penultimate round at Rockingham.

Powell remains second in the championship, but will need to haul back 14 points in the final round at Thruxton next month if she is to fulfil her dream of landing the title.

At Rockingham, Powell qualified in fifth and fourth for the two races at the Northamptonshire circuit.

In race one, she got off to a good start and was in pursuit for third before the safety car came out with five laps left.

It meant she had to settle for fourth place, although she had closed the gap to just two seconds.

Race two proved more difficult for Powell as an early mistake cost her several positions.

She locked her brakes at turn two, sending her off the track onto the grass.

Dropping to 16th place, the Chipping Norton driver battled back to seventh.

Afterwards, Powell said: “I did not qualify as high as I would have liked, but showed the pace in race one to finish fourth.

“My mistake in race two really cost me, but I will definitely learn lessons from that.

“The championship is not over and first place is still within reach. I just need to stay focused and get my head down.”
