Two tries in the final quarter earned Chinnor a 20-8 home victory over Old Patesians.
Full back Richard Williams and replacement centre Trevor Powell touched down to complete a hard-earned victory over last season’s runners-up.
Adam Seager put Old Patesians ahead with a ninth-minute penalty, with Chinnor fly half Ben Hewitt replying in kind on 16 minutes.
It was 3-3 at the end of a forward-dominated half, in which Old Pats had 75 per cent of possession.
The visitors capitalised on a knock-on from the kick-off to send lock Nathan Riley strolling over for their only try.
Chinnor had to defend well against Old Pats’ driving maul, but gained dominance in the scrums when Tom Whelan replaced the injured Joe Pickett at tight-head prop.
The hosts also added pace to their game, and on 61 minutes, Williams entered the line to score a try converted by Hewitt.
On 77 minutes, Chinnor disrupted a Patesians scrum ten metres out and the ball squirted out to Powell who touched down, Hewitt again converting.
Oxford Harlequins got off the mark with a 26-22 win at Cheltenham, which ended their hosts’ two-year unbeaten home record.
Quins took the lead with a fourth-minute penalty from full back Jeff Stewart.
It was 8-0 six minutes later after No 8 Jason Welburn broke through to send prop Simon Chadbone sprinting in for a spectacular diving finish.
Cheltenham replied with a try from left wing Hector Wrafter Quins increased their lead when Tom Speechly’s chargedown and some quick hands sent Andy Noyce racing in frtom 45 metres.
On 25 minutes, a line-out move saw lock Andy Boyle driven over.
Tries from Wrafter and Joe Garner, the first converted by Mike Wilcox, made it 18-17, but just before the break a second Noyce try put Quins 23-17 ahead.
Poor Quins tackling let Cheltenham full back Adam Pickford in for a 46th-minute try.
Cheltenham had prop John Bryant yellow-carded on 52 minutes and both sides huffed and puffed after that.
Flankers Tim Knapp and Matt Young scythed down Cheltenham’s attacks, while Stewart’s 67th-minute penalty sealed the win.
Quins host Chinnor on Saturday.
