Tom Wilson took centre stage for Westbury as his side saw off Shrivenham by 23 runs in an entertaining Airey Cup final at Stonesfield yesterday.
Wilson slammed a superb 83 and then chipped in with two important wickets as Westbury clinched the cup in a game that saw almost 550 runs scored.
Winning the toss, Westbury skipper Richard Tredwell opted to bat on a superb track, and a quickfire 57-run opening stand between Sam Harper and Mark Styles set them on their way.
When Styles fell for a well-constructed 37, that brought Wilson to the crease.
Wilson had a shade of good fortune as he survived a close lbw call when he was on nought.
But he then proceeded to slam all of Shrivenham’s bowlers around the ground, his magnificent 83 containing eight sixes and only two fours.
Tom Boardman added to the entertainment with 53 at better than a run a ball as Westbury posted a formidable 281-7 from their 45 overs.
Chasing such a huge total, Shrivenham needed to get off to a flier.
And they did just that as Adam Tucker and Danny Lloyd shared 70 for the first wicket.
A further 51-run stand between Lloyd and Will Snell kept Shrivenham on track, but youngster Snell, who was batting superbly, was inexplicably run out just short of what would have been a deserved half century.
That dismissal proved crucial as Shrivenham fell further behind the rate.
Although Rhys Mills slammed 26, with 20 of them coming off his first four balls, the damage was done.
It was left to Tredwell to wrap up the tail to finish with figures of 5-78.
Wilson was named man-of-the-match, while skipper Tredwell dedicated the win to club stalwart Deborah Muddiman, who lost a long battle with cancer earlier this year.
