Damian Batt could be sidelined for three months after the right back’s worst fears were confirmed by the results of his scan this week.
It showed serious ligament damage to his left ankle following the challenge in the first few minutes of last Saturday’s derby at Wycombe.
Batt, pictured talking to Alfie Potter at Wycombe after picking up the injury, said: “I’ve got a ruptured ligament on the outside, torn ligaments on the inside and chipped a bit of the bone, so it’s not been a good week.”.
Meanwhile, the U’s may still delve into the transfer market before next Tuesday’s deadline.
Boss Chris Wilder confirmed: “We’ve made enquiries about a couple of players and will just have to wait and see whether anything happens.
“If it does, great. If not, I’m very happy with the players I’ve got here.”
