Jack Midson and Matt Green are set to return for Oxford United today in the club’s first ever match against Accrington Stanley.
The duo dropped to the bench for the midweek Carling Cup tie at West Ham as manager Chris Wilder opted for technically good wide midfielders in Alfie Potter and Mitchell Cole, who would be able to keep hold of the ball.
But for today’s npower League Two match at the Kassam Stadium, in which the U’s are looking for their first league win of the campaign, he looks set to return to strikers who pose more of a goal threat.
Wilder travelled north to watch Accrington’s own Carling Cup clash with Newcastle United and is warning that they will probably try to frustrate the U’s, just as Oxford did to the Hammers at the Boleyn Ground.
“I went up there on Wednesday night, but Newcastle had made 11 changes so it was a bit different to West Ham,” he said.
“They may do what Oxford did a bit and get people behind the ball. I’m sure they’ll make it as difficult for us as we made it for West Ham on Tuesday night.”
Simon Clist and Richie Baker, who came on as second-half subs at West Ham, appear to be getting closer to a starting place themselves.
Accrington, who have yet to conceded a goal in the league this season, are reportedly trying to sign Tranmere striker Terry Gormell, who has previously had a loan spell with the club.
If Gormell is signed in time, he would play as the lone striker, the Reds tending to play a 4-2-3-1 formation with two holding midfielders, making them hard to break down.
