Oxford City boss Mike Ford has thrown out a challenge to Mark Bell – get yourself fit.
The winger, who scored 20 goals to earn them promotion two seasons ago, was plagued by a pelvic injury last season, but Ford feels he is ready to get back on the training ground.
“He’s a very important player for us,” said Ford ahead of tonight’s Premier Division home game with newly-promoted Windsor & Eton.
“He can play wide and in the hole, and his set-piece delivery is very good.
“Mark is worried that when he gets back to playing again his body will let him down, but we think he is physically fit enough.
“So it’s up to him to get himself fit.”
Meanwhile, Ford says the decision to release Jamie Brooks was one of the most difficult he has had to make.
Brooks, 27, left City on Friday after two years at Court Place Farm.
And Ford said: “Players are released all the time with not too much fuss, but with Jamie it’s a real shame.
“I have known him for a long time, but he’s not been fit for 12 months and with money being tight I felt we wanted to bring in some new players.
“He’s as bright as a button technique-wise, but maybe the body isn’t able to do what the mind wants.”
Didcot Town manager Stuart Peace wants more of the same at home to Bedford.
Although Peace’s side drew 1-1 at Bashley on Saturday, he felt his side should have recorded their first victory of the season.
“We dominated the game,” said Peace,” who gives tests to Elliott Osbourne-Ricketts (ankle) and Michael Alexis (dead leg).
“It was a much-improved performance by us and if we play as well as that then we will get our rewards.”
Banbury United manager Billy Jeffrey has urged his side to cut out silly mistakes ahead of the trip to Halesowen.
They went 2-0 up on 36 minutes at home to Tiverton on Saturday, only for the visitors to hit back for a 2-2 draw.
“It’s so frustrating to throw away two points,” said Jeffrey, whose side are at full strength.
“Tiverton weren’t in the game, but we switched off at a throw in and they scored.
“And their second came from a free-kick. I think we went 2-0 up and thought that was it, but it’s not like that.
“Performance-wise we pla-yed well, but we have to cut out these silly errors.”
