The ‘Magic’ Memorial Open, which is run by Sutton Courtenay, is in its 11th year and last Sunday a good field of 21 matchmen gave it their support on the Appleford Reach of the Thames.

Money raised from this match goes to Cancer Relief and this year £105 was raised for the charity.

There was some flow and a bit of colour in the water, but the fishing was hard work.

At the final whistle, Trevor Martin (Didcot Angling Centre) took the honours with 10.2.0, comprising a couple of bream, plus bits, using groundbait feeder with caster and worm.

Also on the groundbait feeder but using red maggot, Bob Gosbee (SC) was runner-up with 9.15.0 – a bream, chub and bits.

Paul Glenfield (BGS Garbolino) worked hard to catch 170 silver fish on a long pole and pinkie for a third-placed 6.14.0, and fourth with 5.3.0 was Andy Whittington (SC), who fished pole and maggot.

Marston travelled over to Lodge Farm to fish their Director’s Cup, and although the lake was well down, it fished pretty well.

Anthony Tomkins triumphed with 56.12.0 of carp on pole and paste, ahead of Wayne Rudman, who weighed in 34.0.0 on corn for second place. Third with 20.8.0 was Luke Sheppard, who alternated between pellet and corn.

The latest Summer Carp League 2010 encounter was a match of two halves for the 18 anglers at Panshill’s Pans Lake – one half of the water fished well, the other didn’t.

It proved a father and son battle for top spot, with Andy Pickett emerging the clear winner and son Daniel runner-up.

Andy caught 39.12.0, starting off on pellet well over and then fishing under his feet with paste.

On the next peg, Daniel weighed in 36.0.0 of carp, also on pellet and paste.

Dave Williams used chopped worm to catch 35.0.0 of carp for third.

Littlemore were over at Boddington for the second round of their Aggregate Cup,.

It is a venue where 100lb weights are common, but last Sunday proved a real grueller for some of the anglers, four of them failing to trouble the scalesman.

Nick Collier won with three carp, two of them good doubles, on pellet-waggler for 28.15.0.

Andrew Stuart confirmed his liking for carp venues with four fish on method-feeder with Pepperoni for a second-placed 24.4.0, while John Wicks was third with three carp on method- feeder with white boilie for 19.3.0.

Oxford Waltonian fished their A&J Cup and Pairs Cup on Littlemore’s stretch of the Thames at Sandford, where the nine anglers enjoyed plenty of sport.

The clear winner with 16.12.0 of roach on pole and waggler using maggot and caster was Steve Foster.

Alan Gee (Acorn Angling) was second with 14.0.0 of perch on chopped worm, while Chris Webb fished the waggler with caster on the hook for a third-placed 11.0.0 of roach.

The Pairs Cup was won by Steve Foster and Paul Bowers.

Only three members bothered to turn up for Oxford Bus AC’s match on their ‘School Waters’ on the Cherwell and those who decided not to fish missed out.

Pete Clarke won with a net of quality roach and skimmers, plus a bream and some perch, on caster for 13.3.0.

Terry Yates had problems with some punts and could only manage 1.1.0, followed by Dennis Butler with 1.0.0 for third.

l Abingdon Town AC are staging a junior match on the Thames on August 28, drawing in the Abbey Grounds at 10am.
