Former Radley ladies runner Hatti Dean was left bewildered after finishing 11th in the 3,000 metres steeplechase in the Samsung Diamond League, Aviva London Grand Prix at Crystal Palace.
Dean’s title of time of 9mins 47.08secs on Saturday was 16 seconds slower than the personal best she achieved when finishing fourth in the European Championships atn Barcelona last month.
“I don’t really know what went wrong,” she said.
“I hung back and then I did not know whether everyone had gone off too fast with the pace or if I was just running too slowly.
“I felt a bit heavy and just couldn’t go any faster.”
Dean settled into last place from the start – as she had in Barcelona – but on this occasion she was unable to move into the pack.
As laps passed the gap widened and Hatti run much of the race on her own, 15-20 metres behind the rest.
She made a move in the last 600 metres overtaking her compatriots Helen Clitheroe and Tina Brown.
The race was won Milcah Chemos of Kenya in 9.22.49.
It was a disappointing night fon which brought the European Championship medallists back down to earth.
European champion Andy Turner was last in the 110 metres hurdles and Christian Malcolm likewise in the 200m, with silver medallist Michael Bingham fourth in the 400m ahead of bronze medallist Martyn Rooney in sixth.
Bronze medallists Chris Tomlinson and Jenny Meadows were third and fifth in the long jump and 800m respectively.
Britain’s only victory came the men’s 4x100m.
