Striker Jack Midson admitted Oxford United had maybe been a bit too kamikaze after they were beaten 2-1 by Bury on Saturday.

In an incredibly open game, the U’s were caught short at the back when Bury broke to score their winner 11 minutes from the end of the League Two clash.

It was United’s first defeat of the season, and a big disappointment after their 6-1 mauling of Bristol Rovers in the Carling Cup in midweek.

Midson had a fine game and scored United’s first-half equaliser, his second goal in successive games.

He said afterwards: “If feels good personally to score, but the result is the thing that matters, and we’ve lost at the end of the day, so I’m not feeling so good.

“I heard the manager say he wanted me to take it on after scoring on Tuesday and hopefully I’ve done that.

“We had chances. I’ve cut a few back for Beano (James Constable) and I’m sure he’ll be disappointed he hasn’t scored.

“He’s really hungry and passionate about scoring goals, but he’ll be back.

“The gaffer’s saying we’ve got to be street-wise and smart, and we go kamikaze really, trying to win the game.

“We’ve got to be smart and grow up, have that professional attitude and leave enough back for that not to happen as it did today.”

This season United’s team is packed full of eager young players who are strong going forward.

Said Midson: “We’ve got young attacking players and maybe those young attacking players make us go forward and that’s probably why we’ve slipped up at the back.

“Mel (coach Andy Melville) has said, as a defensive player, that this can’t happen, whether it’s when you’re 3-0 up, or winning or losing . . . you’ve got to stop that happening.

“We’ve got to grow up a bit and not be so gung-ho going forward.”

United boss Chris Wilder added: “We have to take risks at home – and we did that – but we’ve got to make sure we get the balance right.”
