Oxford United boss Chris Wilder is warning his players, and the fans, not to get too carried away after Tuesday’s 6-1 win over Bristol Rovers.
Tomorrow’s League Two match at home to Wilder’s old club Bury will be tough, he says.
“This is a difficult period for us – Bury at home and then Wycombe away,” Wilder stressed.
“I know Burton were saying last week that they were expecting to be challenging this season, but in other managers’ opinions these two clubs, Bury and Wycombe, will be in and around the top three.
“They’re two great games for us to test ourselves.
“We’ve set great standards so far, especially on Tuesday night, but as I’ve always reiterated, it’s all about winning your next game.”
The manner of the Carling Cup win over Bristol Rovers, which equalled Oxford United’s biggest win in the competition in their first season back in it, has meant the Kassam Stadium ticket office phone lines have been buzzing.
A bumper crowd is expected at the tomorrow, despite the fact that The Shakers are themselves not well supported away from home.
It’s United’s first home fixture in the Football League for more than four years and fans are urged to arrive early to avoid queues.
Midfielder Simon Heslop warned after Tuesday night’s cup triumph: “Bury’s a completely different game.
“You might say it’s an even tougher game than tonight because it is a league game.
“This was a cup game which was not going to affect Rovers’ season. We go back to the league now and that’s our bread and butter.”
Wilder added: “Tuesday’s win should give us a bit of belief to go on.
“There’s no way I get carried away with anything in football and there’s no way I’ll allow my players to.
“The job for me is to keep the players’ feet on the ground – which they will do – and remind them that Bury are a decent side.
They’ve been involved in and around the play-offs for the last two years, with a decent management and decent players.”
- OXFORD United are still waiting for news on the date of their Carling Cup second round clash at Premiership giants West Ham United.
