City of Oxford’s girls held off the might of the United States to make history at the Henley Women’s Regatta.
The club’s junior coxed four crew of Cloudy Carnegie, Chloe Seal, Sian Morgan, Hol-ly Holden and cox Floss Smith, added to their recent National Schools bronze, by striking gold at Henley.
In the final, City rowed through US scholastic champions Egg Harbor Township, to take the title by half a length.
Having set a new course record in an earlier round, the City also beaten regional US champions Green Lake in the semi-finals.
Their victory constituted the only junior win for a crew from a single club as all the other winning crews were composites.
Other City of Oxford rowers fared less well.
The club eights event crew did well to qualify, but suffered an early mistake in their first race and were beaten by a strong Putney Town crew. The senior coxed four won their first round, but came up against their nemesis in a powerful Reading crew.

Not only did they qualify, they beat a good Thames RC crew by just a foot before succumbing to Putney.
