Shipton-under-Wychwood captain Paul Hemming says they have plenty of potential as they prepare for another run in the national stages of the npower Village Cup.

Hemming led Shipton to a four-wicket victory over Cumnor in Sunday’s Oxfordshire final as regular skipper Simon Hole is ineligible for the competition.

Shipton won the Village Cup in 2002 and 2003, but have not reached the national stages since their semi-final run in 2005.

As they look ahead to a last-32 clash with Welsh side Hopkinstown on July 4, Hemming said there were grounds for confidence.

“I would say we are a stronger batting line-up than we were back then, but perhaps our bowling is not quite as good,” said Hemming.

“We still have plenty of options, which is good.

“Jason Hunt, for example, can bowl spin or seam up.”

Hemming added: “I was pleased. I thought we played pretty well against Cumnor.

“Bowling and fielding were the basics this was built on. 200 was probably the par score and we kept them below that.

“Andy Hemming is in a rich vein of form for us and played a great innings to get 103.

“But when he fails, a few others will come to the fore. We have got a lot of good batsmen.

“It was really great to have a start like that. We could afford to lose a few wickets and slow down, but still keep up with the rate.”

Cumnor captain Sam Jones said: “We battled hard, but we were 30 runs short of where we wanted to be.

“As soon as we started getting going, we lost wickets. But we then fielded and bowled well.

“We have a young side and are just looking to go forward.

“Hopefully we’ll avoid relegation and push on from there.

“I think next year could be our year in this competition.

“I’m pleased with the way we played and we wish Shipton well.”
