Openers Harry Smith and Nigel Hume led Oxfordshire Under 17s to a comprehensive six-wicket victory away to Gloucestershire at Bristol in their final one-day warm-up match.

In a thoroughly professional performance, Oxon bow-led out their hosts for 196, before easing to victory with 17 overs to spare – the win coming just in time as the heavens opened soon afterwards.

Gloucestershire won the toss and elected to bat first on a pitch that had a tinge of green and offered something to the seamers.

And Michael Beard and Will Rooney soon grabbed a wicket apiece as the pair sent both openers back to the pavilion cheaply.

Jack Stimpson took the third wicket, before under 16 Matt Taylor reduced Glou-cestershire to 57-4.

A 62-run fifth-wicket stand between Ben Ringrose and Reece John steadied the ship for Gloucestershire, Rin-grose going on to make an excellent 80 from 107 balls – an innings containing 12 boundaries.

But when Ringrose and John fell, wickets steadily tumbled with Taylor and Richard Simpson taking three apiece.

Oxon’s reply got off to a flying start, Smith playing particularly freely in a run-a-ball 63.

He was eventually run out, but not before he and Hume put on 128 for the first wicket.

Hume fell lbw for 49, as the thunder clouds began to gather, while Michael Beard was adjudged lbw for 12.

Captain Richard Cook made a breezy 19, surrendering his wicket to a big shot as rain threatened.

Sam Ryan knocked off the winning runs, finishing 19 not out as Oxfordshire reached 200-4 for victory.
