Andy Hemming compiled one of the npower Village Cup’s highest scores by smashing 200 for Shipton-under-Wychwood on Sunday.
Hemming’s mammoth knock ensured Shipton thrashed hosts Tiddington by 169 runs to set up an Oxfordshire final at home to Cumnor on June 20.
The opener scored 23 fours and nine sixes in his 117-ball innings, which was his first double hundred, as Shipton rattled up a massive 363-4.
Hemming said: “It was amazing. I hit quite a big six to bring up my 200.
“I didn’t know I was so close, but then all the guys on the boundary were going mental.
“It was a fantastic feeling. I didn’t know what to do, so I just waved my bat.
“I was out the next ball, but I didn’t mind.”
Tiddington made the mistake of inserting Shipton and suffered badly with Hemming’s fellow opener Charlie Brain hitting 70 off 48 balls and No 3 Tim Senior bagging 60 from just 28.
Joe Robinson took 3-45 and led Tiddington’s reply with 30.
But although they scored at almost 7.5 runs an over, wickets fell regularly and Alex Mackie was left unbeaten on 40 in their 194 all out.
Left-arm spinner Shaun Miller was the pick of the Shipton bowlers with 4-59.
“It is my first double hundred and probably my last,” joked Hemming, who scored 91 in Shipton’s previous Village Cup match.
“It was a one off, but I will give it another go.
“We played Great Tew on Saturday and they had a pretty decent attack, which made it quite hard.
“I made 58 and it set me up to face an attack that maybe wasn’t as good.
“It is quite a small ground and I just teed off.”
Hemming feels two-time national winners Shipton could go far this year.
“The team that gets out of the Oxfordshire group always has a chance,” said Hemming.
“There is no reason why we can’t go further.
“We have definitely got a strong batting line-up and some experienced spinners.
The omens are also in Shipton’s favour when they face Cumnor as they have not lost a Village Cup match at home since 1995 when Tiddington beat them and reached the final.
Cumnor’s progress into the Oxon final was straight forward as they thrashed Great & Little Tew by ten wickets.
Robbie Catling top-scored with 42 in Tew’s 131 all out, which never looked enough.
Ayaz Khan took 4-17 for Cumnor, while off-spinner Adam Cook claimed 2-13.
Sam Jones, who is filling in as captain while regular skipper Chris Mitty recuperates from a broken thumb, backed up his two wickets with 56 not out in Cumnor’s reply.
Jimmy Nielson made an unbeaten 72 as they cruised to 133-0 in 18.4 overs.
- THAME Town’s Michael Beard made 109 not out in Gloucestershire’s draw with Essex in the 2nd XI Championship.
The promising all-rounder top-scored in Gloucestershire’s 321-6 dec in the first innings.
