SAM Deering is in dreamland.

Two weeks ago he came off the bench to help Oxford United win promotion back into the Football League, and this week he picked up his first caps for England.

The tiny winger was named man-of-the-match by many as the FA Representative XI, formerly England C, beat the East of Scotland League in an International Challenge Trophy warm-up in Edinburgh.

And then on Wednesday night he played before being substituted in injury time during their 2-1 victory against Republic of Ireland Under 23s at Waterford.

All this just 18 months after he suffered a badly broken leg.

“It has been a great experience for me,” Deering said.

“To win promotion and win at Wembley, then to be out there with the Three Lions, on my shirt is unbelievable really.

“It gives you a lift to pull on that shirt and I’m very proud to have been given the opportunity.”

He added: “It was a little bit strange at first because I didn’t really know anyone in the group, but you have to adapt and get on with it.

“We trained pretty hard in between the two games so we became a stronger unit ahead of the game on Wednesday.

“It meant that the season was extended by a week or so, but I’m not complaining.

“I loved the celebrations and couldn’t believe how many people came out to join the victory parade. Then to play for England was another dream come true.

“Now I’ll go and have a break away from football, but I can’t wait to get back already. Pre-season can’t come quick enough this summer.”
