Wembley wizard Alfie Potter says he’s delighted to have the chance to resurrect his Football League career after agreeing a new two-year contract with Oxford United.

The 21-year-old winger came off the bench and netted the clinching third goal in Oxford United’s 3-1 play-off final victory against York City last Sunday.

He had been on a season-long loan from Peterborough United, but has now joined the U’s permanently for an undisclosed fee.

And that will give the former Havant & Waterlooville forward the opportunity of another go at cutting it in the Football League.

At Peterborough he only had two substitute appearances in League Two.

“So I’m looking forward to having a full League season,” he said. “It’s time for me now to get my head down and push on.

“It’s been a great season,” he reflected.

“I didn’t play as much as I’d have hoped, through illness and injury.

“But I’ve loved every minute of it – playing with the other players here, playing under the manager and his coaching staff, and just being a part of everything that has bonded here, with the team and the fans.”

Potter said the team spirit in the U’s camp has been phenomenal.

“A lot of clubs say they’re a tight-knit bunch and like a family, but here it really is.

“All the boys really enjoy each other’s company, not just in football, but before and after games as well, and everyone just really loves playing for this club.”

Potter scored six times for the U’s last season, and would have greatly added to that total had he not been struck down by illness.

Manager Chris Wilder said: “We are delighted that we have been able to agree a deal for Alfie. He is an exciting player and gets fans off their seats, but he is also a good team player and an excellent pro.

“He will be a major asset as we continue to strengthen the squad for League Two.”

The U’s boss also sounded out a message to players’ representatives that just because they had a good win at Wembley, doesn’t mean they will now spend wildly.

“We’re not in a position, as people with agents and everything might think, to go out and get top-notch players.

“We feel the mould of the side is of the Alfie Potters, and the mobile forward-thinking players like Asa Hall and Ben Purkiss we’ve brought in.”
