Schoolboy Bradley Smith scored his first World Championship points with a superb ride in the 125cc British Grand Prix at Donington Park.

The 15-year-old prodigy, who attends Wheatley Park School, came 12th in front of his home crowd in the 25-lap race won by championship leader Alvaro Bautista.

Smith made a slow start, but bagged four World Championship points in just his ninth grand prix appearance.

"From the start I dropped a few places, but I hung in there until the tyres really were up to temperature and then I went for it," said Smith, who celebrated with his family afterwards.

"This time I had more self-belief than in the last two races where I've been in a similar position.

"I told myself I can and I will pass those riders in front of me.

"Four points and racing in front of my home crowd is really the icing on the cake."

Wheatley Park headteacher Kate Curtis said: "Bradley's an absolute star. We are very proud that he's even associated with our school.

"We've had to give him some support, but he manages the whole situation extremely well.

"He gets on very well with his peers and he is just Mr Normal when he is at school."
