OXFORD United boss Chris Wilder has wasted no time in shaping his squad for next season’s League Two campaign.

The U’s made their first capture following promotion to the Football League yesterday by signing midfielder Asa Hall on a two-year contract.

And on the same day, Wilder announced that Billy Turley, Chris Hargreaves, Kevin Sandwith and Franny Green would leave the club.

Hall, 23, was one of four players released by Luton Town earlier in the month and Chris Wilder moved quickly to land him as he looks to build for new challenges next season.

And the U’s boss said Hall’s nose for a goal played a big part in Oxford going after him.

The West Midlands-born player scored 15 times for Luton in League Two in 2008-9, and five times for the Hatters in 27 starts this season.

Capped by England at under 19 and under 20 level, Hall began as a trainee at Wolves before signing for Birmingham City.

He then had loan spells at Boston United and Shrewsbury Town and joined Luton in 2008.

Wilder said: “We realise we maybe need to score a few more goals from midfield and Asa’s record in League Two was excellent – 15 goals for Luton.

“He can handle the big atmosphere too.”

The replacement of Mick Harford by Richard Money partway through last season prompted his release from Kenilworth Road.

“The new Luton manager wants something different from his two central midfield players,” Wilder said.

“I think the way we play with a three (in midfield), which has been successful for us, will suit him down to the ground.

“Obviously he’s got to get into the team first though.

“It’s a situation where we did sign players to get us out of the Conference, with a view to being good enough for League Two.

“But now we need to build a team, an athletic, footballing side with lots of energy and Asa fits that bill.”

At 6ft 2in, Hall is tall for a midfielder, and he admits he gets a lot of goals from headers.

“I’m energetic, box-to-box and I do get goals, that’s a big part of my game,” he said, setting himself an ambitious target of 15 again next season.

“We played 4-3-3 a lot, that suits my game.”

Talks had been going on, via his agent, for some time, so Hall knew what a boost it would be if Oxford won the play-off final to secure promotion.

“I’m very excited to join the club, especially after their promotion at the weekend,” he said.

“I watched the game on the telly – it was brilliant. The support was fantastic, and in good voice too.

“Hopefully we can go up again next season.

“I’ve played in the League for Shrewbury, on loan, and obviously at Luton we were relegated because of the points deduction.

“To get back in the Football League is what every player wants, and hopefully I can really push on in my career with this.

He added: “It wasn’t just the prospect of a move up from the Conference that attracted me to Oxford, however.

“The atmosphere when Luton played here last year was excellent, the ground’s lovely, it’s a big club that deserved promotion.

“It’s a bit more special that they did actually get promotion in the end.

Wilder said: “He’s an athlete, a good player who will get forward and get in the box.

“We’re flexible in what system we use, but he gives an extra dimension to our midfield.”
