Oxford United striker Matt Green said that scoring and winning at Wembley more than made up for his own personal heartache 12 months ago.

Green was part of the Torquay squad that won the play-off final against Cambridge United last season, but never made it onto the pitch.

“If you had told me 12 months ago that I would score at Wembley and win the play-off here I’d have snapped your arm off,” he said.

“It wasn’t a nice feeling before, but this is just brilliant.

“I knew the keeper wasn’t in the goal when the ball dropped to me.

“So I just wanted to make sure I got it on target, which I did.

“And I made the best contact I could have done.

“I just couldn’t believe it when the ball flew into the net.”

The goal put the U’s into the lead, and Green made a beeline for a corner of Wembley.

“I promised my family that I would run and celebrate with them if I score, so I did that.

“It was a bit unlucky that I had to run the length of the pitch to do so, but I didn’t care.”

Green, on-loan from Torquay, now hopes that his future at United can be sorted.

“I don’t know what’s happening,” he admitted.

“We are all going to enjoy this first, but then hopefully things will get sorted.”
