Playing against his former club Oxford United will make the final extra special for York City left back Chris Carruthers (pictured).

“There's going to be a slight edge on it,” he said. “But once the whistle goes, it’s going to be like any other and I just want to try and get the result.

“I think a lot of the lads realise it can be career-changing and that’s why everyone is so focused.

“The way we’ve performed this season has stood us in very good stead for a lot of tough games that we’ve had, and I think it will drag us through again.”

Carruthers is the only member of the current York squad to have tasted play-off success at the modernised national stadium during Bristol Rovers’ 3-1 2007 triumph over Shrewsbury in the League Two final.

“There’s no better feeling than winning promotion at Wembley and it’s an interesting game for me. I am looking forward to it and it will be a great day again as long as we win at the end of it.

“It’s up to whoever takes their chances on the day and I’m sure it will be a tight game as they all are in the play-offs.”

About winning the free kick that led to hopeful penalty appeals before his eventual goal, Carruthers added: “It was outside the box.

“I just toed it past their defender and I could have got in on goal but he got there late so I won the free-kick. I then ran in and managed to nick a goal which is always nice.

Carruthers, along with the rest of his team-mates, was forced to seek refuge with City fans in the Oak Road end after the final whistle when angry Luton supporters poured on to the pitch after York’s play-off semi-final victory.

He said “It wasn’t good at all. Their fans were a bit of a disgrace and we didn’t get the chance to enjoy the win.

“At least, we could do our celebrating away from the ground.”
