It may have been top against bottom, but Oxford came desperately close to beating leaders High Wycombe on their own ground on Saturday.

Oxford played above themselves before losing by one wicket after a dramatic final over.

Chasing 258 for victory, the home side needed four runs to win from the final over, bowled by Ian Evans, with four wickets standing.

Wycombe then lost three wickets for two runs, before their last man scrambled two runs off the final ball to secure an exciting one-wicket victory.

Evans finished with 6-55 for Oxford, whose performance belied their basement position in the table.

Put in to bat on a good pitch, Oxford got off to a flying start thanks to a brilliant century from Joe Porter (pictured).

The old Oxford Blue made 112 and was given great support by Stewart Laudat who contributed 57.

When these two were going well, a score in the region of 300 looked possible.

However, no other Oxford batsman made 20, as spinners Chris Sketchley and Matt Gitsham picked up regular wickets to induce a collapse.

So Oxford were all out for 257 in the 62nd over, which crucially meant that they gave Wycombe four extra overs.

There were good opening spells for Oxford by by Stuart Hole, David Slade and Jack Brooks.

But a good stand between Bucks players Jason Harrison and Paul Sawyer put Wycombe on course for what looked like a comfortable victory.

Oxford never gave up and nearly pulled off a miraculous victory.
