Oxford Cavaliers had much to cheer from a 28-10 home defeat to Greenwich Admirals in the Co-operative Rugby League Conference – London & South League.

The last time these clubs faced each other, Cavaliers were hammered 76-0 and there was some trepidation after Oxford had to give Swindon St George a walkover in their opening fixture.

But Cavaliers played with great commitment and Jack Briggs scored their opening try after running from inside his own half.

A Greenwich try made it 4-4 at half-time and they showed their class with four more tries in the last 20 minutes.

Wing Andy Blacklock’s solo try, converted by Tom Waterfield, rewarded Cavaliers’ second-half efforts.

  • CHINNOR retained the Oxfordshire Veterans Cup after defeating Grove 19-3 at Iffley Road.

Grove, who included first-team coach and former Chinnor player Nathan Brooks, made Chinnor toil, but could manage only one penalty.

Chinnor’s tries came from Bill Deeley, John Sellars and Mike Wiltshire, with Conor Begley kicking two conversions.

  • OXFORD’S minis have celebrated a host of recent successes.

Their Under 7s Hyenas won the Oxfordshire Festival at Chipping Norton, while the B team lost in their final. A week later, Oxford Under 7s won the South-East England tag competition at Henley.

Oxford Under 8 A, B and Cs won the Oxfordshire Cup, while the under 9s were runners-up.
