The battle of the top matchmen in the Maggots End/Mosella final at Lower Court Farm produced four weights over the ton, writes Andy Webber.

The 12 finalists were the monthly winners of the competition throughout the year and in the grand fish-off, it was Robin Cave (Isis VDE) who emerged triumphant on his first visit to the venue.

He fished paste over meat at 5-6 metres to weigh in 150.11.0 and take the top prize of a Mosella tackle box, which was presented by Vic Bush of the sponsors.

Just behind was Cameron Simms (Littlemore) who started on the waggler before switching to the paste at 6 metres, weighing in 132.14.0.

In third place was to Dave Rudman (Littlemore) who caught 113.13.0 on worm up in the water, while Mather Fisher (Grauvell) was fourth with 103.03.0, fishing chopped worm down the edge.

A total of 863.7.0 of fish were caught between the finalists, and Roger Young, boss of Maggots End, thanked everyone at Lower Court Farm for their efforts.

Benson were hosts to the first Berks and Oxon Series match which was fished by 13 on the local stretch of the Thames.

Although the bream showed on some pegs, in general the venue was very patchy and did not fish all that well.

Taking first place with an impressive 71.13.0 of bream up in the top field was Steve Gray, who fished groundbait feeder with maggot on the hook.

Also up in the top field was Martin MacDonald who had four bream, plus some bits, on groundbait feeder for a second-placed 18.0.0.

Pegged on 'the wall' was Mick Marriott, who used a blockend feeder with maggot and landed a couple of half-decent chub for third place with 8.11.0.

Littlemore AS travelled over to Didcot's Jack's Pond last Sunday to fish the first round of the Aggregate Cup and it was a dream debut for Neil Grant, who not only won the match but the Golden Peg too.

Fishing tight to the lilies and the margins on peg two, he mustered a good net of carp weighing 55.8.0.

Dave Higgs was also fishing his first match and could quite easily have won it, but he lost some carp that just wouldn't come out of the reeds. He also had an all-carp net on pellet for second place with 30.0.0.

A mixed net of carp and bream on pellet gave Gerald Perks third place off peg 13 with 24.0.0.

Lower Moors was the venue for the Ken Stevens Memorial, the latest outing for Sutton Courtenay.

The 14 anglers found the Thames with a little flow and a nice colour and at the end of the match it was decided it had fished quite well.

Using a worm/caster cocktail fished with a groundbait feeder, Frank Grisbrook put ten bream, a tench and perch on the scales for a winning weight of 42.6.0.

John Percival (Percy) drew out the chub peg which has been renamed the bream peg after he caught 26.4.0 of the slabs from it on a feeder with a sweetcorn/caster cocktail.

A nice mixed net of perch, chub and roach earned Bob Gosbee third place as he alternated between the pole and the waggler with either corn or maggot on the hook for 8.11.0.

Ten members of Oxford Waltonians travelled to Panshill to fish their English Cup and it was Tony Gee (Acorn Angling) who took the honours. He fished the pole across to the island with caster and fed pellet for 16.7.0 of carp.

Not very far behind was Pete Armstrong with a second-placed 15.1.0, all his carp coming from the margins on bread. Jan Jetowski was third with 7.11.0 on waggler and maggot.

Masons' third Points Match was fished at Chalmore where the 12 anglers found plenty of fish to be had.

With two bream taken on groundbait feeder and worm and then switching to the waggler and maggot, Dave Pether weighed in 13.12.0 to take the top prize.

Andy Benwell only just missed out when he put 12.0.0 of fish on the scales, his two bream and some bits all coming to the feeder and maggot. Geoff Kidd used the same tactics to tempt three bream for a third-placed 11.8.0.
