Simon Aries, of Fieldside, won the Oxford & District League’s Oxford Times Cup for the fifth time after beating Paul Robinson 500-486 at Cowley Conservative Club, writes DICK HASHMAN.
But it was close, with Aries just edging out teammate Robinson to add to his previous victories of 1999/2000, 2000/2001, 2001/2002 and 2006/2007.
Robinson stormed into a 100-82 lead, before rattling in a break of 40 to make it 200-175.
Robinson then made breaks of 37 and 25 to lead 306-244.
Aries got into his stride, knocking in breaks of 23, 25 and 35, before nosing into a 420-400 lead.
He made another break of 30 and looked set to win, but Robinson crept back with a 50 break.
But Aries was not to be denied, as he squeezed home to lift the trophy for the fifth time.
