Oxford City will have their work cut out to avoid relegation from Southern 1 West in the UK Young Athletes League, after they finished fourth in their third-round meeting at Basingstoke.

Losing points to teams in the same region of the league was a blow to their survival chances, but the day was still positive for a number of City's youngsters who provided some great competition.

Once again it was lack of numbers proved City's undoing, with the under 17 age group only able to be field six girls and two boys.

Under 13 Emily Moore won her long jump and then improved her 75m personal best, while Emily Carstairs provided three personal bests in her events including another grade 1 performance in the 150m.

Becky Hill ran a superb 800m in her first attempt over this distance, and then jumped a big personal best in the long jump.

Elsewhere, Amy Cooper won the B string shot, and Ellie Clarke-Jacques was victorious in the 800m.

She was matched by Lauren Hawtin in the B string 1200m, while in the A string Beth Swords ran a personal best for second place.

The under 15 girls were depleted due to several athletes taking part in regional combined events.

However, Kirsty Warland strolled to a win in her hurdles, and Melissa Hawtin totally outclassed the field in the 1500m.

Danielle Anderson won her Javelin by almost nine metres, and Nionah Ntaranga won the equivalent B string event.

The highlights for the under-strength under 17 ladies were a storming win for Jade Clarke in the 300m, a double success for Natalie Delahunty in the long and triple jumps, Natalie Venn's javelin victory, Emily Patrick's 800m triumph, Emma Sutton's double in the shot and discus and Carla Jones' personal best in the 200m.

In a competitive under 13 age group, City's only win came from Joe Foxon in the B string long jump.

The under 15 boys struggled, with the only win coming from Tom Foxon in the B string long jump.

Tom East and Ian Castle worked hard, but with just two athletes had no chance of taking many points in the under 17 age group.

Result: 1 Aldershot 393, 2 Guernsey/Jersey 325, 3 Kingston & Poly 294, 4 Oxford City 265.
