Oxford Cavaliers cancelled their TotalRL.Com Conference South West and Midlands Division clash with Somerset Vikings as they were unable to raise a team.
Club spokesman Steve Davy insisted this was a "one-off" and said Somerset had been understanding about it.
Davy said: "It was a bit of a shock, but it seemed the long trip to what would have been a defeat put some off.
"Others, such as myself, were genuinely unable to make it.
"A bout of Tottenham Hotspur-esque food poisoning finished off a few players and our chances.
"It is concerning after the problems of last season, but it is a one-off.
"Last season were that the club was being run as a one-man operation by a person who ended up living in the North. This year it is thankfully different."
