Ii was reassuring to have my rod licence checked when I fished a match at Butlers Lake last week, but it would be more satisfying to have the Environment Agency walk along the Windrush at Newbridge now and again, writes CLIVE TAYLOR.

Every Tuesday morning in the close season I drive past the Rose Revived pub and there is usually somebody illegally fishing the river for barbel or chub.

Once or twice I have tackled them and their attitude is one of indifference.

On my return journey, there is usually a pile of coke bottles and meat tins left on the bank.

The EA tell me they have to assess the situation for risk before they can attend and that it is probably the angling club's problem to deal with. Surely it as much their responsibility to take some action.

JUST across the county border, Thatcham AA are organising an open day at their lakes in Lower Way, Thatcham.

Top anglers Bob Nudd, Martin James, Nigel Sharp and Mitch Smith will be fishing one of the lakes and will give advice later to junior anglers who will be fishing a club match.

Tackle and bait suppliers will be in attendance and there will be a chance to learn how to set up properly in a bait and rig clinic. Even those who have never fished before will be able to have a go on the day.

A barbecue and refreshments stall will be available, along with a bouncy castle for children. The event runs from 8am-5pm and entry is £1 for adults and free for children.

The lakes are reached by travelling south from Oxford on the A34 to Newbury and turning off left onto the A4, turn right at the third set of lights before you come into Thatcham.
