MICK Channon is dreaming of Derby glory after Championship Point destroyed his opponents in the Predominate Stakes at Goodwood on Saturday.

o It has been 27 years since a horse has gone on to land the Epsom showpiece having triumphed in the same race the great Troy but the West Ilsley handler is now hopeful of emulating Dick Hern.

Channon talked up Championship Point's chances of glory, and bookmakers agreed, slashing his odds to 25-1.

Although there were only five runners, Ted Durcan's charge simply demolished his rivals.

He demonstrated a devastating turn of foot that only horses of the highest quality possess, and his jockey was afforded the luxury of easing his mount right down in the closing stages.

The four-length victory over Sienna Storm flattered the runner-up.

"It's all about this horse, and I don't care about the opposition. He's a proper horse and always has been," said the trainer.

Winner of the Chesham Stakes as a juvenile, the form of his subsequent second in a Deauville Listed race was boosted by the winner Linda's Lad who went on to win a Group 1 race.

"It's only after Linda's Lad went on to win that Group 1 race that people have started to take notice, but we're thrilled with him and the track and trip at Epsom will be fine."

Stablemate Top Seed, carrying the same colours of John Livock Bloodstock Limited, completed a double for owner and trainer in the finale under Sam Hitchcott.

Bin Rahy completed a good week for Channon when landing the Avonmouth & Portbury Occupational Health Ltd Handicap at Chepstow.

Chris Catlin drove the three-year-old to a three-length win over Glenmuir.

Whatcombe handler Paul Cole was on the mark with Bentong in the totesport.com Handicap at Salisbury on Saturday.

Sent off the 5-2 favourite having been backed down from 4-1, Bentong cruised to a three- length victory over Pearly Wey.

With firm going, Cole's charge put in such an impressive performance that he broke the course record to land the valuable £13,398 first prize.

Cole was also in the winners' enclosure when Figaro's Quest won the Holiday Inn Garden Court Wolverhampton Banded Stakes.
